New York based tenor saxophonist/composer Seamus Blake is recognized as one of the finest exponents of
contemporary jazz. His music is known for its sophistication, bold improvisations and “sheer swagger." John Scofield,
who hired Seamus for his “Quiet Band,” called him “extraordinary, a total saxophonist.” Seamus Blake’s latest two
releases, “Bellwether” (Criss Cross Jazz 2009) and “Live in Italy” (Jazz Eyes 2009), have garnered considerable
critical praise for his masterful playing, his fine compositional skills and for his facility as a leader. “Live in Italy” was
awarded 4.5 stars in Downbeat. Described as “a knockout,” “one of the elite albums of the year” and “as exhilarating
as a shot of espresso,” it is on many Top of the Year lists. Blake’s band includes drummer Bill Stewart (Scofield,
Metheny), David Kikoski, piano (Henderson, Haynes), Lage Lund, guitar (2005 Monk Competition Winner), and
bassist Matt Clohesy. Showtime is 4 p.m. |
The Interplay Jazz Band has excited audiences throughout the Valley since 1995. The quartet performs jazz-driven
instrumental original compositions, choice standards and modern jazz classics that run hot and cool and appeal to
both jazz aficionados and new listeners alike. The band blends influences from hard bop, straight-ahead jazz,
Brazilian sambas and bossa novas along with rock-fusion and odd-meter grooves. The band will perform at 2
p.m.This performance is supported by a grant from WESPAC, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts
Cultural Council, a state agency.

The West Springfield and Westfield High School Jazz Ensembles will also perform
at noon and 1 p.m. respectively. And, don't forget that Jazz Sunday will kick off with the "Jazzy 5K" road race, which takes place at 10:30 a.m. at the Senior Center.
